Social Action at St. John’s

Jesus calls us to care for our neighbors, at St. John’s we follow that call through the Social Action Ministry. Our Ministries encompasses 5 distinct social action networks—Food Insecurity; Caring Neighbors; Gun Violence Prevention; Community, Equity, Inclusion; and Climate Care. Descriptions, goals, and opportunities to be involved in this work are highlighted below for each network. For more information, contact Marti Dever.

Caring Neighbors

With homelessness on the rise in Boulder County, the Caring Neighbors Ministry does our part to be of service. We respond to Jesus’ call to offer food and drink to the hungry and thirsty and to welcome the stranger. We host an indoor meal on the first Sunday of the month, grab-and-go dinners on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and another indoor meal every Thursday.

Community, Equity, and Inclusion

The Community, Equity, and Inclusion Network engages in advocacy, education and action to support and improve the social mobility, economic conditions, and quality of life for all people. Subgroups within the network include corporate membership and participation in NAACP Boulder; Whittier Pantry which provides necessary items for families at Whittier Elementary who have need; advocacy and outreach that seeks to redress the circumstances of racial minorities and other marginalized people.

Gun Violence Prevention

In our belief in the sacredness of human life, this network is devoted to advocacy in protecting lives from gun violence. Accomplishments include an annual gun lock giveaway at the County Fair, partnering with the District Attorney for a gun safe giveaway, and continually participating in calls to support strong gun violence prevention bills.

Food Insecurity

St. John’s Food Insecurity Social Justice Committee engages in volunteer activities to help address critical hunger issues that individuals and families face in the Boulder County area. Our committee members regularly volunteer at food pantries, including EFAA (Emergency Family Assistance Association) in Boulder, conduct food drives, and host letter writing campaigns.

Climate Care

The Climate Care Network works to raise awareness of global warming and its impact on our planet, our daily lives, and our neighbors across the globe, in the greater Boulder area. We have solar panels to offset our electric use, conducted a city-wide conference on Climate Care, through the generosity of Boulder, switched our use of single-use plastics to reusable dishes, and supported a remodel for our kitchen to be ECO friendly.
